 Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

Issue 1              Volume 1

 Building Your GRG Connections

     From Sue Bartolomeo, Program Coordinator

We are excited to bring you our first GRG Connections newsletter!  This newsletter is your platform to build connections with other grandparents who are also raising their grandchildren in Palm Beach County.

Some of you have told us how much you feel supported and are learning at the GRG monthly meetings.  Continue building your GRG Connections as you share your stories, attend the workshops and encourage others to do the same.  Send your written contributions to us by e-mail or regular mail.

Appreciation Buckets

From A.B. a West Palm Beach Grandmother

Set up an appreciation bucket for each member of your family with their name on it.  These can be small plastic pails or small boxes placed in a central location in your home.

Each family member can then leave little written notes of appreciation and affection in the other person’s bucket letting them know how much they care about and value them.  A picture will do also.

You can also leave candy treats or other little items you know they like.  Maybe even a movie ticket.  Use your imagination and be creative!

Make this an ongoing daily practice and not just a one-time thing.  You’ll be surprised at how this increases positive communication and strengthens your family bonds.

How Much Time Do You Spend Communicating a Week?

 From Family Treasures

Did you know there are 10,080 minutes in every week?  How many of those 10,080 minutes do you think you spend in conversation with your partner?

The average couple spends only 17 minutes each week in conversation according to the findings of Drs. John DeFrain and Nick Stinnett (authors of Family Treasures) at the University of Nebraska Lincoln Extension.

So if the average couple only spends 17 minutes conversing with each other each week, how much time is then spent in conversation with the grandchild they are raising?

Of course, if you are a single GRG, this makes the time you spend talking with your grandchild even more important.

Drs. DeFrain and Stinnett suggest setting aside 15 to 30 minutes each day to talk with your spouse.

And don’t forget to set aside some time everyday to talk with your grandchildren as well.

“Indirect communication is hinting instead of saying what is really meant.”
